Forest Bathing is a slow sensory woodland walk. It calms and energises your mind and body, balances your nervous system and lifts your spirit. A Forest Bathing walk feels very different to a common walk. When you intentionally spend quality time under the canopy of trees and perceive nature directly through your senses, you can experience it in new, meaningful ways. You immerse yourself and remember and deepen your innate connection with the living, natural world. Most likely you will experience Forest Bathing as deeply relaxing, revitalising, joyful and memorable. Some participants found that it positively transformed their relationship with nature, themselves and others.
Indigenous and ancient cultures were aware of the healing and restorative powers of the natural world. For example, Egyptian doctors prescribed walking in nature to alleviate anxiety and grief, and the Ancient Greeks had hospital gardens to support healing and recovery. In 1982 Japan introduced the practice of Shinrin-Yoku (which translates as “bathing in the atmosphere of the forest”). Today Shinrin-Yoku is practiced in many countries across the globe with certified guides present in at least 23 countries across 6 continents. The practice is becoming increasingly popular worldwide.
There are many overlaps between Nature Immersion and Forest Bathing and sometimes the terms are used interchangeably. However, Forest Bathing involves spending time in an environment with at least one or more trees, whilst Nature immersion can also involve techniques to engage with natural areas without trees. For example, Nature Immersion can guide us to enjoy larger landscapes like grasslands, mountains, rivers and seashores, or smaller green spaces including meadows, gardens and any urban locations with Biophilic designs. Nature Immersion may also include practices involving elements like natural light, wind, rain or the sky. Forest Bathing and Nature Immersion techniques have very similar calming and revitalising benefits. Meet in Nature offers Nature Immersion and Forest Bathing techniques in conjunction to optimise the restorative potential of any space with natural elements.
Whether we are a nature lover or prefer to spend our time indoors, many of us will be surprised by the positive effects of guided quality time in nature. In addition to mental and emotional energy restoration and many other wellbeing benefits, you will likely also experience a renewed sense of aliveness, freedom, peace and connection with yourself and the natural living world around you.
A trained and experienced Forest Bathing/Nature Immersion Guide will:
No, you simply need to be able to walk. Meet in Nature walks are slow and gentle. They include breaks and prioritise safety and comfort. They usually cover distances of under a mile.
Events take place all year round and in most weather conditions. Rain can positively enhance the experience and increase beneficial chemicals in the air. In rare cases of torrential rains or high winds your event might be cancelled.
A brief introduction will put your mind at ease and give simple tips for the session ahead. You will then be guided on a slow sensory nature/woodland walk and invited to optional, easy to follow, relaxing, nature-based techniques. There will also be an opportunity to sit or lie down. Each event is a unique experience and might include additional elements tailored to the group, whilst also benefitting from the specific characteristics of the environment and the season.
Bring water and wear weather-appropriate clothes including comfortable footwear that can get wet or muddy. We move slowly and our body temperature is likely to drop. As trees also create their own cooler micro-climate, extra layers are advised.
